Item Ou-Kersaandgesprek van Friedrich Schleiermacher in Afrikaans : agtergrond, vertaling en hermeneutiek(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 2003) Van Aarde, A.G. (Andries G.)In his Christmas Eve Dialogue (Die Weinachtsfeier: Ein Gespräch), Schleiermacher reflected on the theological tension between the quest for the historical Jesus and the dogma of the incarnation of Christ as “true God” and “true human”. In the fashion of his Romantic contemporaries, Schleiermacher presented his theology in the form of a story about friends celebrating Christmas Eve and their thoughts on the meaning of Jesus’ birth in their lives. This story was written in 1805 and printed in Gothic German in 1843. The aim of this article (the first of a series) is to translate Schleiermacher’s Christmas Eve Dialogue in Afrikaans. This article gives a brief biographical overview of Schleiermacher’s life and discusses the theoretical premises of his hermeneutics. After the translation of the first part of the Christmas Eve Dialogue (pages 465-472 in the 1843 printed edition), the article concludes with an explanation of the reasons why he would write such a story.Item Nederduitsch Hervormde Sustersvereniging (NHSV) in 'n postmoderne samelewing(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 2003) Kloppers, Elsabe (Elizabeth Catharina)In this article the women's society of the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk is discussed and the character of the society is related to certain aspects of postmodernism. It is argued that in many respects, the women's society is postmodern in a positive sense: it is flexible, spontaneous and genuine; communication is on an equal, non-authoritarian level; it is not concerned with positions of power, but with people in need – with the marginalized; it is concerned with doing, that is, visual proclamation through deeds. It uses many modes of postmodern communication, such as images and imagination, and has a corporate image that communicates the vision and mission of the society in a visual way. The conclusion is that it is not the specific problems of a certain age that are important, but the way in which these problems are addressed. Through the ages, women have had the unique ability of addressing problems and shaping an age.Item Relasie tussen grondbesit en die sosiale struktuur van Palestina in die Herodiaanse tyd(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 2003) Volschenk, G.J. (Gert Jacobus)The article describes the relationship between land tenancy and social structure of Palestine. Secondly it describes the conflicting perceptions of land tenancy within the social structure of Palestine. The conflicting perceptions of land tenancy led to conflict between the elite and the peasants. This conflict was intensified by the hierarchical social structure of Palestine. The article concludes that the use of the social scientific model of the social structure of Palestine prevents anachronism and reductionism in the interpretation of biblical evidence regarding land tenancy.Item Soeke na die betekenis van Q : inleidende opmerkings oor die geskiedenis van Q-navorsing(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 2003) Nel, G.C.J. (Gerhardus Cornelius Johannes)According to the two source-theory, large parts of the material in Matthew and Luke which show conformity and which are not found in Mark, point to the existence of a source which comprises sayings of Jesus and reminds one of the typical wisdom material in the Old Testament. In this paper a few introductory remarks are made on the history of the research done in respect of this source, known as Q. The questions regarding the actual existence and origin of Q are briefly discussed in the first part of the paper. Four aspects of Q research are addressed: Q is a document which shows its own integrity; the distinction between tradition and redaction in Q; stratifications and phases in the development of Q; the wisdom character of the material in Q.Item Kerk se korporatiewe identiteit(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 2003) Buitendag, JohanThis article investigates the rather unknown theme of “corporate identity and corporate image” as applied to the church. Starting from the premise that corporate identity enables us to communicate change, direction and a church’s point of difference, it is evident that proper strategic and visionary management is a prerequisite for the church today. “Corporate image is in the eyes of the world” and this urges the church to regard this undertaking in a serious light. Thus, a church's unique selling proposition has to be identified, not necessarily to compete, but to add specific value for its members. The concept of “sur/petition” of Edward de Bono (vis-à-vis competition) is pursued in an integrated value system. The article addresses the distortion between the intended and the received image of the church.Item Luister na die storie van die kerk : riglyne vanuit ’n narratief-hermeneutiese perspektief(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 2003) Dreyer, YolandaA church as a denominational entity cannot but contemplate where it would like to be in the near future. Reasons for this are the losses of the past, the issues of the present and the uncertainties of the future. In the article this matter is approached from a narrative hermeneutical perspective within the framework of a social constructionist model. The focus is on: collective memories, the different emphases of narratology and narrative hermeneutics, the dialectic between foundational myths and everyday stories of people’s lives, the recollection of memories within a temporal framework, grand narratives and contra narratives, as well as the relationship between fiction and history. The aim of the article is to show how narrative strategy pertains to engaged hermeneutics and enhances self-actualization.Item Teoretiese inleiding tot narratiewe hermeneutiek in die teologie(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 2003) Dreyer, YolandaThe premise of this article is that narrative hermeneutics as a method of research in theology departs from a dialectical relationship between hermeneutics and the method of interpretation. The article aims to describe and explain narrative as a “way of knowing”. It focuses on the form, content, function and context of myth. Myth is foundational to the lifestories of people and groups. The discussion on narrative theory applies Paul Ricoeur’s concept of the “hermeneutical arch” in narrative hermeneutics. The article concludes with the idea that narrative as a way of knowing is ideological critical and deconstructs dominant socio-cultural narratives. The story of Jesus of Nazareth as the foundational myth of the Christian faith community can function as a contra narrative in order to give meaning to people’s lives in the presence of God in a postmodern world.Item Female visibility through Korean literature : feminist theological critique(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 2003) Jeong, Eun Ok; Dreyer, YolandaThis article introduces Korean women’s experience as seen through the lense of social and cultural backgrounds, from the premodern through to the postmodern era. Korean literature is used as a source to investigate Korean women’s experiences and perspectives. By means of feminist critique this article explores men-centered influences in Korean literature. It aims to illustrate the importance of the issue of female visibility through Korean literature from a Korean woman’s perspective. Two texts are analyzed and critiqued: the first is the myth of Korean origin. The second is a story of Gasi Gogi (a thorny fish). The article is intended to stimulate debate on gender, voices, and authority from a feminist perspective, in order to transcend the more traditional interpretations.Item The Old Testament in Christian spirituality : perspectives on the undervaluation of the Old Testament in Christian spirituality(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 2003) Lombaard, Christoffel Johannes StephanusChristian spirituality draws strongly on the Bible. Yet, it is the New Testament that almost without exception features most prominently. Ten possible reasons are offered why the Old Testament takes on such a disproportionately diminutive role in the practice and study of spirituality: Textual complexity/critical scholarship/theological education; Modern popular pieties; The cultural gaps between the Old Testament worlds and our worlds; Theological difficulties/Christian sensibilities; Fear of “boundary-less” interpretations; The reference to Scripture by writers on spirituality; The notion of progressive revelation; Theological diversity within the Old Testament; OT : NT = law : grace; The long and the short of textual units.Item The foundation, value and meaning of baptism in the New Testament(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 2003) Groenewald, JonandaIn the symbolical and social world of the first Christians, baptism functioned as a “cultural symbol”. Ensuing from Gerd Theissen’s (1999) work, A theory of primitive Christian religion, the paper explains the opinion that religion, defined as a system of cultural symbols, consists of sacred mythical narratives conveying ritual values which can be internalized through participation. Theoretically argued, there is a historical reason why a specific symbol/rite fits the social context. Behind the contextualized rite lies an idea which communicates values and provides meaning. From the textual evidence in the New Testament, this article demonstrates the historical foundation, the value and meaning of being baptized.Item The destruction of Jerusalem and the transmission of the Synoptic eschatological discourse(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 2003) Taylor, N.H.This study examines the eschatological discourses in Matthew and Luke. Each is considered in its narrative context, and with detailed attention given to developments in the transmission from their common source, Mark. While both reflect awareness of historical events during the period between the composition of Mark and the time of writing, they relate to the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple very differently. While Matthew is clearly written after 70 CE, the eschatological discourse is not influenced by the events of that period. The eschatological discourse in Luke, on the other hand, has been fundamentally reshaped in the light of those events.Item Schwarze Theologie von Allan Boesak – mit besonderem Hinweis auf seine Anthropologie(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 2003) Van Wyk, J.H. (Amie)Allan Boesak is a well known theologian and political reformer in the South African context. In this article the author scrutinises the political theology of Boesak in general and his anthropology in particular. The last section of the article is devoted to an assessment of Boesak's contribution as developed within the broader context of the theology of liberation. The investigation clarifies the fact that, although Boesak represents a more moderate kind of liberation theology, serious questions could still be raised about some of his insights.Item Ekonomie in die tyd van die Bybel as ’n huishouding-gebaseerde ekonomie(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 2003) Volschenk, G.J. (Gert Jacobus)The aim of this article is to describe the economy in the time of the Bible as a household economy. Firstly, the results of social scientific research indicated that the family institution was the primary socio-economic and political building block of the first century Mediterranean world. Secondly, the social scientific model of the pre-industrial city is used as interpretation framework for the first century Mediterranean economy. The article concludes with a reflection on the exploitation of peasants by urban elite and aristocrats. They were absent landowners who controlled the land and production on the land.
