dc.description.abstract Success or failure in achieving identification with characters plays a decisive role in the emotional involvement of motion picture drama viewers. The author of this article identified 270 specific guidelines and techniques for creating effective identification with characters from existing sources. These guidelines and techniques are broadly divided into five categories: needs, motivations and goals; personality traits; physical traits; circumstances; and behaviour. These guidelines and techniques are deliberately and effectively applied in screenplays that are commercially successful, but are lacking or ineffectively utilised in most commercially unsuccessful screenplays. In this article the five categories of identification techniques are discussed and illustrated with examples from motion picture dramas. The article concludes with a comparison between the utilisation, or lack of utilisation, of identification techniques in the first acts of the Hollywood production The Karate Kid and the South African production Brutal Glory respectively. en
