It is unlikely that Standard Afrikaans has been based on one relatively uniform vernacular. Ana Deumert has convincingly argued that what we recognise as Standard Afrikaans today is a construction to be attributed to language entrepreneurs who strove for a unique South African identity towards the end of the nineteenth and early 20th century. This led to deliberately discarding some of the then metropolitan Dutch linguistic norms. The Afrikaans negative and diminutive systems will be shown to be the linguistic outcome of these conceptions of identity and purity.
Dit is onwaarskynlik dat Standaardafrikaans terug te voer is op een relatief uniforme vernakulêr. Ana Deumert toon oortuigend aan dat wat ons vandag as Standaardafrikaans herken, ’n konstruksie is wat ons te danke het aan die strewe van taalentrepreneurs teen die einde van die 19de en vroeë 20ste eeu. Hulle het aan ’n eie Suid-Afrikaanse identiteit gebou. Dit het soms daartoe aanleiding gegee dat daar bewus teen die Nederlandse norm ingegaan is. Na aanleiding van die Afrikaanse negasie- en diminutiefsisteme word aangetoon hoe bepaalde identiteit- en suiwerheidsideale linguisties gekonstrueer is.
