Abstract:
In this inaugural address, delivered on the occassion of official acceptance of the chair of Sheep Husbandry and Wool Technology, an attempt was made to indicate the position of this subject amongst the "established" sciences. By way of introduction the ancient history elsewhere, and modern history locally, of the sheep and goat industries were discussed in brief. This was followed by and historical account of the teaching of Animal Husbandry generally, and of Sheep and Wool in particular at the Transvaal University College from 1916 to 1930 and, subsequently, at the University of Pretoria (1930-1961). Attention was given especially to past teachers of the subject, both professors and lecturers, and also to the students trained during the period in question.
