The researcher aimed to explore the factors contributing to the low morale of officials in the Department of Correctional Services. A qualitative research approach was implemented in this research. The researcher followed a phenomenological orientation and she conducted semi-structured interviews with 17 respondents whom are working as internal custody members. A comprehensive literature study was conducted to explore employee morale and factors intrinsic to the workplace that could impact morale. Recognition, management, departmental changes, training, employee well being and job challenges were discussed. Factors contributing to the low morale of officials were lack of financial recognition, specifically inadequate compensation and promotion; poor relationship with management; ongoing Departmental changes and lack of training to equip and prepare officials; occupational stress and support; job satisfaction, specifically job environment had a negative impact on morale, and for all the factors identified only job challenge appeared to improve morale. Finally the researcher aimed to make a worthwhile contribution through this study by making recommendations to the EAP profession and management of the Department of Correctional Services to improve their understanding and insight to what factors are contributing to the low morale amongst employees and to address these issues that are sapping the morale of the officials.en
