Abstract

Failure to gain weight in a normal way relates to problems of food intake, uptake and utilisation. Practically speaking, the problem is one of two main categories: insufficient food intake or an organic condition leading to failure to thrive. The health professional must distinguish between these in order to respond appropriately. The Road to Health card is an essential monitoring tool.
