dc.description.abstractIn 2006, 2011 and 2017 SAICE and the CSIR cooperated to produce “report cards” on the condition of engineering infrastructure in South Africa. Apart from providing condition gradings for several classes of infrastructure, the reports cards also draw the attention of government, and of the public at large, to the importance of maintenance, and to factors underlying the state of repair of infrastructure. Of the 10 infrastructure sectors assessed in the report cards, four incorporate transport aspects, viz roads, airports, ports and rail. The paper: reviews the overall findings of the 2017 report card, and in particular the findings with respect to transport fixed infrastructure;
