dc.descriptionClinical history : A 72-year old woman presented with a tumour mass in the right hypochondrium and at laparotomy a diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma was made.
dc.descriptionChemotherapy was given and good response obtained: 5 cm hepatomegaly disappeared and all the biochemical parameters including serum alfa-fetoprotein and carcinoembryonic antigen values became normal.
dc.descriptionNine months later hepatomegaly and weight loss recurred and chemotherapy was ineffective.
dc.descriptionShe died 10 months after the initial diagnosis was made.
dc.descriptionAutopsy findings : 1. Hepatocellular carcinoma in right lobe of liver.
dc.description2. E. coli isolated in post mortem blood culture.
dc.description3. No signs of metastatic carcinoma.
