Description
Clinical history : A 72-year old woman presented with a tumour mass in the right hypochondrium and at laparotomy a diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma was made.
Chemotherapy was given and good response obtained: 5 cm hepatomegaly disappeared and all the biochemical parameters including serum alfa-fetoprotein and carcinoembryonic antigen values became normal.
Nine months later hepatomegaly and weight loss recurred and chemotherapy was ineffective.
She died 10 months after the initial diagnosis was made.
Autopsy findings : 1. Hepatocellular carcinoma in right lobe of liver.
2. E. coli isolated in post mortem blood culture.
3. No signs of metastatic carcinoma.
