Abstract:
The concept of innovation in business models is an emergent field that has earned interest in business practice and academia. It is associated with driving growth and sustainable competitive advantage in organisations. However, despite the increase in literature on business model innovation, little is known on what drives business model innovation.
Using a qualitative multiple case study approach, this study explores the antecedents of business model innovation in the traditional industries of banking and mobile telecommunications to explore how organisations in these industries innovate.
The study identifies business model innovation insights through ten semi-structured interviews with senior managers at the identified organisations. These insights expand on the theoretical and practical insights of business model innovation and enhance the understanding of some of the significant dimensions of business model innovation (Foss and Saebi, 2017).
