Wanneer die beelde uit die oog geneem word – teks en beeld : 'n teologiese probleem
(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 2003) Kloppers, Wilhelm C.
The over-emphasis of the Lutheran theology according to which the "ears alone" would be appropriate, as well as the Barthian theology of "the word alone", led to a negative evaluation of images and the visual aspects of communication. In this article it is argued that texts and images are sides of the same coin which both contribute to understanding and which therefore communicate the faith in ways that are different, yet very similar. When text and image are separated, it leads to deficient imagination and communication. It is shown that theology cannot escape the forming of images and communication through images. Theologians therefore need profound training in the understanding of images and in creative communication through images and imagination – theologians need Bildung.

Verkondiging deur musiek : 'n aspek van kreatiewe geloofskommunikasie
(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 2003) Kloppers, Elsabe (Elizabeth Catharina)
The question of music ministry has become a focal point in the Dutch Reformed Church. The debate arises primarily from discontent about rigid and uninspired musical practices in the church. These practices are promoted and affirmed by one-sided theological views, according to which the spoken word as God's Word, is over-emphasized, and proclamation through music and other means is denied. In some Reformed churches this one-sidedness led to responses in the form of a music ministry with new one-sided approaches. In this article it is argued that music, singing and other forms of art need to be recognized and promoted as ways of communicating the Gospel on various levels. An encompassing strategy for creative communication of the faith within a more active liturgy needs to be developed. Liturgists need to be well-trained for such an encompassing task.

350 Years Reformed in South Africa : the contribution of the Reformed Presbyterian Church in Southern Africa
(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 2003) Duncan, Graham A.
This paper traces the development in terms of its heritage and legacy of a Reformed Presbyterian Church in Southern Africa, from its beginnings in the Scottish Mission, to the present. It notes the oppressive role of missionary dominated Mission Councils throughout most of its history as well as the formative events of the formation of the PCSA and the Mzimba Secession. This led to the establishment of an independent, albeit not autonomous church in 1923. The RPCSA had a proud record of participation in the ecumenical movement and in socio-political issues, in particular in education.

To know how to find. To find without knowing : wisdom in the Gospel of Thomas
(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 2003) Liebenberg, J.
At the SBL meeting in Orlando in 1998, the contemporary metaphor theory practised by cognitive linguists such as Lakoff, Johnson and Turner, was used to identify some of the basic metaphors appearing in Thomas 1-5, which the author believes to be important for coming to terms with the metaphoricity of many of the sayings in the Gospel. The ensuing discussion of Thomas 08 and Thomas 109 is yet another attempt to show how the insights of cognitive linguistics, which have for the most part been ignored by contemporary commentators on the parables and aphorisms of Jesus, can perhaps provide us with fresh insights into this part of the sayings of the Jesus tradition.

Perspektief op hoop as pastorale bemagtiging in die rouproses
(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 2003) Smith, Willem Jacobus; Dreyer, Yolanda
This article elaborates on existing research pertaining to the grief process. It focuses on the dynamics and effect of grieving. Grief is experienced differently by different individuals. The aim of the article is to search for ways in which people can exist with authenticity and hope in the presence of God in spite of the experience of loss. Three issues are addressed: the circumstances of grief; the influence of people’s God-images on the grief process; as well as the traditional viewpoint on the phases and emotions connected with the grief process and an alternative perspective. The article highlights the dynamics and diversity of experiences in the grief process.

Kultuurkritiek en die Hervormde benadering tot teologiebeoefening : ’n gestaltegewing en uitdaging
(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 2003) Beukes, Johann; Beukes, C.J. (Cornelius Johannes)
This article investigates the relation between a critique of culture and the theological approach which is detectable in the theological labour of the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk. This theological approach is being described with reference to the three main intellectual traditions that maintain this approach in an equivocal fashion, namely the ethical, confessional and dialectical traditions. After summarising the most prominent characteristics and claims of these traditions, the author proceeds to bring this approach in relation to aspects of contemporary critique of culture.

Eensaam in die Voortrekkergemeenskap : askese en geloofsbelewing in die teologie van die Voortrekkervrou Susanna Smit (1799-1863)
(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 2003) Raath, A.W.G. (Andries Wilhelmus Gerhardus)
An evaluation of Susanna Smit’s commitment to introspection, meditation and solitary contemplation necessarily has to be undertaken in the light of the major impact of the theological pietism of the Dutch Second Reformation on the Voortrekker community. Although the theological literature of the Dutch Second Reformation fundamentally influenced her views on these matters, the economic, political and ecclesiastical position in which she found herself also substantially contributed to her tendency towards solitary contemplation. The tendency to experiential ascesis is, however, not limited to the Dutch Second Reformation, and the impact of current economic and political factors on the church makes it essential, from an ecclesiastical point of view, to take note of the factors which contributed to the emphasis on mystical experiential theology. For this reason the diaries of the Voortrekker woman Susanna Smit are most illuminating and relevant.

Analities-deskriptiewe oorsig van die gebruik van die term sinkretisme : “Die definisie van die probleem en die probleem met die definisie”
(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 2003) Beyers, Jaco
Contemplating syncretism entails defining the concept. Definitions of syncretism are many and diverse. This fact does not only suggest a problem with the definition, but also contributes to the perplexity of the issue. Various strategies may be followed to break the impasse: redefining syncretism, abolishing the term or acceptance of a plurality of perspectives. The article aims to illuminate the complexity of syncretism, as well as attempting to reach a useable definition. It proposes a neutral approach and way of defining this complex concept.

Missionêre diakonaat : ’n uitdaging vir die kerk
(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 2003) Schutte, P.J.W. (Philippus Jacobus Wilhelmus)
This article seeks to show the importance of diakonia as a ministry of the church, not only as a service in the church, but also as a service to the community in which Christians and the church live. To establish diakonia in that sense, also as a missionary activity, some paradigm shifts would be necessary. This article prepares the ground for the initial steps in that direction.

    Ekonomie van die antieke platteland
(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 2003) Volschenk, G.J. (Gert Jacobus)
This article is an introduction to a three part series on the ancient economy. The conflict theory is the reference framework for the interpretation of the first century Palestinian society. The broad characteristics of the agrarian society are being discussed. Two aspects of the ancient economy, namely production and distribution of resources and goods are discussed. Lastly, the ancient economy can be interpreted within a holistic and systemic-interrelated model. The model shows the place and function of the economy in the ancient society.

Struktuur en boodskap(pe) in die boek Daniël
(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 2003) Van Deventer, Hans J.M.
The book of Daniel presents a number of challenges that scholars have not yet been able to solve. This article focuses on the problem related to the bilingual character of the book of Daniel (Hebrew and Aramaic) and the fact that the two languages do not correspond with the two literary types found in the book (court tales and visions). From a structural perspective this phenomenon is utilised to indicate specific accentuated sections in the book of Daniel. On the basis of these findings, suggestions are made regarding messages in the book. These suggestions combine historical and literary approaches to the text.

The exposition of John 17:6-8 : an exegetical exercise
(Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, 2003) Van der Merwe, D.G. (Dirk Gysbert)
This essay is an exegesis of Jn 17:6-8 aimed at gaining an understanding of what the Fourth Evangelist tries to emphasize and to communicate concerning the character and success of Jesus’ earthly ministry. Firstly, a discourse analysis is conducted to point out the linguistic symmetric parallelism through which the Evangelist (1) emphasizes the success of Jesus’ ministry, (2) structures the principal components of Jesus’ ministry and the response of his disciples and (3) tries to explain the meaning of these components. Secondly, a theological exposition of these principal components is conducted, in respect of (1) Revelation: jEfanevrwsav … devdwka; (2) Obedience /Acceptance: tethvrhkan … e[labon and (3) Faith: e[gnwkan … e[gnwsan (ejpivsteusan) earthly ministry.
