Prof Nene Qekwana is acting as interim director of the African Centre for Biosecurity and Risk Assessment and will be looking into sustainable research funding. The outgoing OPVSC committee was acknowledged with a few 'best performance' prizes from the student life awards and the new OPVSC was welcomed. The 2024 BVSc class will be the 100th BVSc group to graduate from the Faculty of Veterinary Science. The positions for HOD of CACS and the Hospital Director post, are in the final phase and the position for HOD of PAS is advertised. Discussions with clinical staff in PAS and CACS addressed new models to strengthen student training and case management at OVAH and the role of private practice in the process. Enterprises at UP is relooking the model for management of short courses and departments will be invited to innovative sessions to identify possibilities. A number of staff with Prof Keddy as PI, co-submitted an application to the MRC for laboratory equipment to enhance research in biosecurity and preclinical drugs. Wilma Moon is appointed to ensure smooth implementation of the lab management system and Siemens sponsored a camera crew to create a marketing video for OVAH. As part of fund-raising projects the wish for a new campaign and webpage for OVAH is expressed, and the OP PGSA convinced University Marketing to take on the promotion of bone marrow donations as a major community engagement project for UP.Item Scribbling for Success, Volume 1, issue 4(University of Pretoria. Faculty of Veterinary ScienceThis issue covers the Spring Graduation Day, the Programme Qualification Mix (PQM) with assistance from the team from Institutional Planning, the re-accreditation of the DVTD and milk laboratories by SANAS, Health and Safety reps at the faculty, the attendance of the 'Flexible Futures Workshop' and the role of AI in teaching and learning. The founders of Anipedia are in discussion with the Department of Library Services to transfer the electronic book platform to UPSpace. The cattle Feedlot Challenge is back after the fixing of the pens, and future collaboration with the Bristol University and Ankara University, also received coverage. Sibanye Stillwater has been working with UP towards the development of micro-entrepreneurs in agro-processing, and an online wellness campaign will be hosted by the SAVC in September where Monica van Niekerk, our postgraduate student advisor, will be a speaker.Item Scribbling for Success, Volume 1, issue 3(University of Pretoria. Faculty of Veterinary ScienceThis July issue mentions the second Veterinary Faculty in South Africa and touches on the fifteen new Beagle puppies received with the assistance of ClinVet and a general invitation to Faculty members to suggest names for the new additions. It covers the Wildlife Clinic's role in pulling through eighteen poisoned vultures, the successful completion of another Faculty Day with Dr Mark Penning, an alumnus of the Faculty, as keynote speaker. Prof L McGaw received the Researcher of the Year award, Dr J Hanekom the Emerging Researcher of the year award, Andeliza Smit with the Best Oral Presentation, Megan Antrobus with Best Poster presentation, and Le Roux Pepler as the Best VRE Student. OPPIHUB, a new postgraduate information hub, is launched with collaboration of the OP PGSA. Funding discussions with DHET is in progress regarding National Skills applications and a new application is submitted to HWSETA. Faculty is looking into a business model and partnership with Easichicken, while investigations is in progress on involving private practice in final year student training. The Dept of Agriculture approached the faculty to get involved in the relooking of the Animal Protections Act. Philanthropist, Gary Taylor, obtained rights to the wedge of land adjacent to the faculty and agreed to allow Faculty the use of the land.Item Scribbling for Success, Volume 1, issue 2(University of Pretoria. This issue covers operational cost and income, the renewed MOU with Mpumalanga Province regarding the Hans Hoheisen Wildlife Research Station, hospital renovations, SETA funding, DALRRD as manager of animal research, accreditation visits, future funding models, the biosecurity focus areas, and discussions with Black-ink Signatures on setting up of a nearby animal shelter.
