Geskiedenis as universiteitsvak in verhouding tot ander vakgebiede

Abstract

In this lecture two aspects of the subject as stated above are being considered: in the first place the emergence of History as an academic discipline in universities overseas as well as in South Africa, and in the second place the interrelationship between History and other disciplines taught at university level.

It was not before the nineteenth century that History was generally accepted as an independent discipline. Before that it was subordinate to other subjects. It was considered as a branch of Literature or taught in conjuction with other subjects such as Law, Philosphy, Theology and Political Science. In other words, History was considered as an auxilliary to other disciplines.
