In South Africa and globally, the long hours, tight schedules, and limited rest opportunities for drivers create a perfect storm for fatigue-related incidents ‒ many of which result in catastrophic consequences. Traditional fatigue management systems, largely reactive in nature, have proven insufficient in addressing the real-time risks that fatigued drivers pose. In response to this pressing challenge, innovative and proactive solutions are urgently needed. This presentation introduces the Predict and Prevent app ‒ an advanced technological tool that redefines fatigue management through real-time detection and prevention. Harnessing the power of gamification, the app engages drivers in short cognitive tasks designed to assess alertness levels. If signs of fatigue are detected, an automatic alert is triggered, notifying supervisors and initiating intervention protocols before the driver becomes a danger to themselves and others on the road. This predictive capability ensures that high-risk, fatigued drivers are identified and removed from duty before accidents occur, positioning Predict and Prevent as a breakthrough in road safety innovation.1 pagePDFSouthern African Transport Conference 2025An innovative solution to combat fatigue : the silent killer on our roadsArticle
