In 1918 he was appointed as senior veterinary researcher in the S.A. Dept. of Agriculture and send to the Armoedsvlakte Research Station where he joined the famous Dr. Arnold Theiler in research on botulism (lamsiekte). In 1920 he was transferred to the Veterinary Research Institute at Onderstepoort and promoted to the rank of Deputy Director. In 1927 he succeeded Dr. Theiler as Director of Onderstepoort.
