His passion from the age of 5 years was to be a veterinarian and to help realise this dream he worked after matriculating at SAA in the maintenance department and as a truck driver until he had sufficient funds to study Veterinary Science at Onderstepoort. He qualified in 1972 and was posted immediately to Ixopo as state veterinarian in order to fulfil his bursary obligations. He then moved to Vryheid as state veterinarian and later started his own practice there. In 1979 he took up a post at Pretoria City Council and subsequently obtained an honours degree in Public Health from Onderstepoort. Duncan worked in over eleven countries performing his speciality namely fertility and embryo transfer. His many achievements include exporting the first cattle embryos to Mauritius, the first person to do non-surgical embryo transfer and establishing a world record with twenty- four live born calves from a single embryo flush1 page : colour photoPDFen©2022 Veterinary History Society of the South African Veterinary Association.
