In 1936 he qualified as a veterinarian at the Faculty of Veterinary Science of the University of Pretoria at Onderstepoort and joined the staff of the Veterinary Institute there as research officer. For many years he also acted as part-time lecturer in anatomy and embryology at the Faculty of Veterinary Science, until he was appointed professor and head of this department in 1955. He filled this position with distinction until his retirement in 1974. During 1979 and 1980 he taught anatomy and embryology at the Medical Faculty of Medunsa and in 1981 also to zoology students at the University of Pretoria and pharmacology students at the Pretoria Technicon. Later in 1981 he became assistant to the Dean of the Veterinary Faculty at Medunsa and temporary head of the Department of Anatomy until 1985.
