It is argued that this church, since it commenced with missionary work in South Africa in 1737, showed a positive and reconstructive attitude towards women. Presently many so-called coloured women hold high positions in the ministry and moderamen of this church. It is therefore appropriate that Nelson Mandela called his Cape Town residence "Genadendal" in commemoration of the first Moravian mission station in South Africa and the work done there for the past three centuries in service of human dignity. As such it is also appropriate to dedicate this article to Carl Borchardt for his inclusive attitude towards women colleagues.AfrikaansFaculty of Theology, University of PretoriaBorchardt, C.F.A.
