After qualifying, he worked briefly as a State Veterinarian in Estcourt before establishing a mixed veterinary practice in Greytown, where he practised for several years. Following an embolism sustained during a canoe race, he was unable to continue in private practice and returned to State veterinary service. He later retired to Howick.
