In his book 'A Marxist looks at Jesus', he attemps to understand, from a positive, yet still Marxist viewpoint, the essence of Jesus' message. He makes a radical, unbridgeable distinction between the Jesus of history and the kerygmatic Christ, between what he calls the 'image of the man Jesus of Nazareth' and the 'dogmatized image of Jesus Christ'.
