The symposium was held at the University of South Africa on 27–28 October 2011.Laser applications in the medical fields are increasing. Most applications must penetrate through skin layers to reach the treatment area. In this study, a computer model is used to predict absorption in different skin phototypes. Results indicate that darker skin phototypes absorb three times more laser light at a wavelength of 632 nm than lighter skin phototypes.Afrikaans© 2013. The Authors. Licensee: AOSIS OpenJournals.
