He obtained his BVSc degree at the Faculty of Veterinary Science, Onderstepoort in December 1937. For many years he was stationed in Zululand and played a major role in the eradication of Glossina palidipes (control of tsetse flies) which was the main transmitter of Nagana in the area. In 1961 he was appointed to the post of Sub-Director in the Division of Veterinary Services.
