Abstract

India has been at the forefront of kangaroo mother care (KMC) promotion and implementation in the past three decades. In this article, we describe the history of KMC implementation in India and how KMC has become the standard of care for all preterm or low-birth-weight infants. We distinguish three phases in the development of KMC implementation and scale-up: the early years, the slow middle years and becoming a leader.
