Abstract

This essay explores the causes of traffic congestion in southern Africa and provide solutions to alleviate the problem of traffic congestion thereafter. Throughout conducting research about this essay data was collected from secondary sources such as newspapers, the internet, and articles. Quantitative data was also of great use in gathering information. Traffic congestion on roads is a major problem in many cities across Africa and the southern African region and need implementations on how it can be alleviated. While conducting the research about this essay, focusing on the southern African region recent studies identified the City of Pretoria and East London as the most congested cities in southern Africa. As such this essay will place its focus more on the most common causes of congestion and use the cases of Pretoria as examples to support the stated causes and there after providing solutions on how to alleviate traffic congestion. However, the solutions given are meant to be adopted in the whole SADC. The essay concludes that alleviating traffic congestion is achievable, and encourages the involvement of city planners in the transportation sector, the collaboration of local governments together with city planners and community members.
