Abstract

The City Council of Pretoria initiated this project as a portion of the redevelopment of the civic centre of Pretoria. It comprised three essential components: the redevelopment of Church Square; the pedestrianisation of Church Square; the redevelopment of Sammy Marks Square.

The Sammy Marks Square project is discussed under the following headings: brief, urban context, historical design considerations, design language, detailing, budget, project programme, documentation and construction. Photographs and plans are included. The team of professional architects were: Studio 3 Architects cc (City of Pretoria component); D. Henzen and J. Becker; Stauch Vorster (private sector component). Interior designers: Julius and Company. Landscape architects: Gouws Uys & White. Consulting structural and civil engineers: Lillicrap Crutchfield (Pty.)
