Dr. Duncan Hutcheon, MRCVS, qualified at the Royal Veterinary College (Royal Dick) in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1869. He came to the Cape Colony in 1880 to join the Colonial Service. An exceptional veterinarian in all respects and was confronted by many infectious and non infectious diseases. He considered that lamsiekte (botulism) in cattle could be prevented by feeding crushed bones as it was caused by a phosphate deficiency. Many years later (and after the deaths of probably millions of cattle due to lamsiekte) he was proved correct.en
