The South African Reserve Bank (the Bank) turns ninety in 2011, which makes it the fourth-oldest central bank outside Europe. This paper reviews the institutional history of the Bank since 1921. The conclusion is that the institutional structure of the Bank had to be revised periodically to ensure alignment to changing domestic and international developments and challenges.en
