Small rural towns of South Africa are bustling with lots of pedestrians because of population increase, driven by the twin forces of migration and urbanisation. While vehicle users are on the increase in small rural towns, there is also a parallel increase in the number of pedestrians as town users are doing their daily errands. In any case, each one of the town users is a pedestrian at some point as they move from one point to the other, doing their business. This study examines pedestrian crossing safety in Thohoyandou, a small rural town in South Africa, where both vehicle and pedestrian traffic are rising. Using a case study approach, the research identifies and characterizes formal and informal pedestrian crossing points, explores associated safety challenges, and proposes context-specific strategies for improvement. Data was collected through questionnaires, interviews, and observation. Findings reveal the prevalence of informal crossings, often located near key destinations but lacking safety infrastructure. The findings underscore the importance of improving transport infrastructure, implementing traffic calming measures, and promoting pedestrian education are critical for enhancing safety in Thohoyandou and similar rural contexts.
