Abstract

Wilhelm Otto Daniel Martin Neitz was, internationally recognised as research expert on theileriosis. He was born on 17 November 1906 in Potgietersrus, Limpopo Province, South Africa and died on 18 August 1979 in Pretoria, South Africa. He was a research veterinarian, protozoologist and virologist and In the late 1930's he discovered the first chemotherapeutic cure for heartwater (cowdriosis) of ruminants. Photo showing Dr Neitz inspecting poultry. He was a staff memebr at Onderstepoort for 41 years (1930-1971). He was part-time professor of protozoology and virology at the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences, UP (1948–1957) and part time professor of protozoology (1958–1968). Visiting professor at the Freie Universität, Berlin, (1960’s) and Universidade Federale do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, (1972 -1979). (Source: S2A3 Biographical Database of Southern African Science)
