A parasite is described which infects red blood corpuscles of the giant girdle-tailed lizard Zonurus giganteus, Smith. The relationship of this parasite to other organisms is discussed and the conclusion is reached that it represents a new genus of the sporozoan family Piroplasmidae (Babesidae). The name Sauroplasma thomasi is proposed for it.en_ZA
