dc.description.abstractThe literature indicates that the transition from self-leadership to leading others is one of the most complex and challenging transitions any leader must go through in their career. This transition is attributed to several factors: shifting from a functional to a leadership role, developing new competencies and behaviours required to lead others, managing several stakeholders, and navigating a corporate culture that may not support leadership development. In addition, the leadership transition of black South African females includes additional challenges such as gender discrimination and inequality in the workplace, a corporate culture that lacks diversity and navigating a male-dominated corporate environment. A qualitative study comprised of 16 semi-structured interviews with black South African females was conducted. Through the research analysis, several key insights were identified. These insights will aid individuals and organisations identify which factors positively influence the successful transition and long-term sustainability of leadership roles for black South African females. The research provides a model and implementation plan that could practically support individuals and organisations navigate the challenges black South African females face as they transition into leadership roles. In addition, the model elucidates which factors most positively influence the successful transition of black South African females into leadership positions.
