This paper will argue that the union which brought the Uniting Presbyterian Church in Southern Africa into being was based on an inadequate vision of the role of the Church in Southern Africa. While it was a natural outcome of various attempts at union for over one hundred years, many untested assumptions were made concerning the process and outcome of the union. Subsequent problems have forced the UPCSA to reconsider the basis of the union and to work through some of the many hurts and problems experienced.en
