Papers presented virtually at the 43rd International Southern African Transport Conference on 07 - 10 July 2025.
Our roads and bridges are under an increasing pressure from the growing transport sector, lack of funding and extreme weather conditions fueled by global warming. The presentation will delve into the use of bridge weigh-in-motion systems in mitigating these risks - from monitoring of overloaded vehicles to protection of bridges and structural health monitoring. Three practical applications will be presented: − a large scale use of bridge weigh-in-motion systems in Slovenia and the resulting decrease in the percentage of overloaded vehicles. − protection of a bridge with a maximum gross vehicle weight limitation in the Netherlands. − advanced structural health monitoring of a bridge combined with bridge weigh-in-motion.
