This qualitative study explores the challenges faced by the South African mining industry in decarbonising. The industry is a significant contributor to the national economy and plays a crucial role in global efforts to mitigate climate change. The study involves interviews with mining professionals and industry experts to comprehensively examine the decarbonisation strategies employed by South African mining companies. The focus is on identifying the key drivers and barriers to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and highlights the importance of the mining sector in achieving climate targets through strategic energy management and the adoption of renewable energy sources. The study found that the mining industry has made progress in addressing Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, but there are limitations in terms of technology maturity and policy frameworks. The study also identified Eskom's energy supply monopoly as a significant barrier to the widespread adoption of renewable energy sources. These insights emphasise the need for a nuanced approach to decarbonisation in South Africa, taking into account the economic significance of the mining sector and the unique challenges it faces. The study provides valuable perspectives on sustainable practices in heavy industries and offers crucial information for stakeholders, policymakers, and industry managers to shape future strategies and policies for a sustainable and low-carbon mining industry in South Africa.en_US
