Abstract

This dissertation seeks to investigate the literary concept of space used in a biblical text. The aim of this study is twofold: firstly, to use current research material on the theory of space and develop it for own use; secondly to see if any new light can be shed on the interpretation of the pericope of Genesis 2:4-3:24 through this theory. The hypothesis of this study is that the investigation of space as a literary construct will help identify new perspectives on the Genesis 2:4-3:24 pericope. The fundamental presupposition of this study is that the pericope was composed as a complete narrative unit and that every sentence has its due part to play in the narrative. Using knowledge from the narrative and social sciences together with insights from philosophy and archaeology an effort is made to develop and define a particular spatial theory. The theory is then applied through various spatial analyses on various levels of the text. This study shows that the narrative of Genesis 2:4-3:24 is not the product of literary confusion but rather literary brilliance. Additionally, it illustrates the far reaching effects of its spatiality on later texts and societies, and that as a construct of narrative art its potency cannot be undermined. AFRIKAANS : Hierdie verhandeling ondersoek die gebruik van ruimte as a literêre konsep in 'n Bybelse teks.
