dc.description.abstractThis dissertation is concerned with aspects of the newly-proposed approach to nonlinear acoustics in which the Lagrangian description of gas motion is followed. It contains a systematic survey of the approach which leads to the so-called dynamic piston problem. Then new situations regarding the piston problem are studied. These situations cover cases of varying applied pressure and results concerning the formation of shock discontinuities are presented.en
