The skills of Matlala will be scrutinised to establish if he is a successful author of Sepedi informal essays who is said to be the best in this type of writing. The theory guiding the research is the Adapted narratological model, using a quanlitative approach to describe and interpret Matlala’s essays. Data will be collected from Matlala’s collection of essays entitled Mengwalo (Essays) Puku II (1943), focusing on four essays which are ‘Lexae’, ‘Fisika-tshipi la Ramosweu’, ‘Tato ya monnyana ke lesoxana’ and ‘Sakeng la bophelo’. This article reveals in what way Matlala showed his Sepedi essay writing skills effectively. His skill becomes clear in the analysis of his informal essays, which shows that he arranged them according to a clear structure in which all the parts are cleverly woven into one coherent whole, namely, title, introduction, body and conclusion. He adhered to the requirements that are generally accepted as the correct ones for the four respective types of informal essays into which these writings can be classified.
