Abstract
navorsers hul tans in 'n moeilike situasie bevind:
So is daar na
voorgestel is.
English: This study takes the view that researchers at academic institutions are faced with a difficult situation: on the one hand they experience problems in their personal management and handling of information during their research activities, on the other hand they are under pressure to increase their research output. A number of projects have been launched, especially in the USA, to assist academic researchers through the information technology. However, these projects have generally not taken the researcher's task performance, especially their personal handling and management of information, sufficiently into account. This study has tried to adapt present guidelines and models and to develop a framework for the design of an information system which supports the academic researcher in his task performance. In order to develop models and guidelines, several variables in the task performance of the academic researcher are identified and discussed. On the basis of Blom's task performance model (Blorn, 1980, p. 53) the variables of philosophy, sociology and psychology of science, as well as creativity, are discussed. The academic researcher's task performance, i.e. the research process, is discussed, and defined to the information functions, i.e. the personal management and handling of information. Problems with regard to the personal management and handling of information are identified, and solutions in the form of information technology and information expertise are suggested. Models are developed to represent some of these variables. Implications and guidelines are inferred from the variables that were discussed to serve as framework for the development of a suitable information system.
