Abstract

The Van den Berg house was built shortly before Eaton’s death. The horizontal character of his designs is more evident than ever. Roof planes hover over the house. The corrugated sheet roof is the first element visible from the elevated street, with reddish brown tiles covering the corrugations. The house is “a combination of the transparency and smoothness of large glazed surfaces with the roughness of textured brickwork” as described by Harrop-Allin (1975:89) Drawing NR P 33/8, sections through lounge & bedroom blocks, brick pigeon hole cubboards. Site plan, elevations & groundfloor plan. Flat roof. Glass window facades. Stepped site.
