Papers presented virtually at the 43rd International Southern African Transport Conference on 07 - 10 July 2025.
This presentation will focus on the global status quo of the implementation of WIM systems for direct, automatic weight enforcement. It will describe the advantages of this application of WIM and the key elements required for a successful implementation: legal acceptance, system certification and data quality control. It will cover the challenges of having to guarantee the quality of each individual WIM measurement through a combination of periodical and continuous tests. It will discuss the acceptance of international type approval certificates versus the need to adapt approval tests to specific national conditions (traffic and environmental). Finally it will provide considerations and recommendations for starting the implementation based on experiences from around the world.
