Abstract

Ophthalmology has developed during the past 3 500 years from a mysterious unknown subject in 1 500 BC to a highly developed and technologically dependent profession in 1992. Yet, today, more than ever before, there are millions of blind people world-wide and especially in Africa, suffering from treatable eye diseases. This is the challenge facing the ophthalmologist and a department of Ophthalmology.
