Abstract

The Risk Assessment Procedure for South Africa (RAPSA) model, developed to enhance road safety prioritization, integrates insights from the Netsafe Accident Prediction Model and the South African Road Restraint Systems Manual (SARRSM). In its draft stage, RAPSA offers a framework for engineers to estimate accident rates and assess benefit-to- cost ratios related to Road Restraint Systems (RRS). Emphasizing the importance of expert judgment, RAPSA underscores the significance of enhancing restraint systems to safeguard road users. By providing engineers with data-driven insights, RAPSA facilitates informed decision-making, ensuring the optimal selection and implementation of RRS for enhanced safety and cost efficiency on South African roads. The model was used to assess a section of the Nation Route 10 – Olifantskop Pass.
