Abstract

The Department of Orthodontics was founded in 1960 with an independent head of department. After 35 years it is appropriate to delineate the field of study of modern orthodontics and also to set course for the future. This inaugural address will contrast orthodontics for Africa in the context of a developing country with orthodontics in Africa in the context of a developed country. The department envisages playing an important role in training the healthcare workers who will provide community-based services in the identification, prevention and treatment of malocclusion in South Africa
