The important role of dictionary use and teaching to advance grammar teaching in the Intermediate
Phase is examined by various authors. However, dictionary teaching that takes place in an
integrated manner with the prescribed requirements of the curriculum document(s) and the textbook
has received limited attention in theoretical publications. For this reason, the focus is on these
three areas specifically (lexicography, grammar and the school curriculum) and their
contribution to learning Afrikaans Home
Language.
The study seeks to determine the effectiveness of the practical use of the dictionary and the
integrated use of the textbook in the grade 4 classroom. The results of this study aim to determine
what type of exercises / teaching (curriculum teaching or a combination of dictionary and
curriculum teaching) best equips the learners and assists with the learning of Afrikaans as
Home Language. The study further aims to prove that integrated dictionary and textbook teaching
(coupled with the curriculum requirements) can significantly contribute to the learning of
Afrikaans Home Language.
The dictionary used in this field research is the Pharos Junior Bilingual School
Dictionary (PJTS). The textbook is the Piekfyn Afrikaans Huistaal Learner's book. The curriculum
documents are the National Institute for Educational Development (Namibia) and the
Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (South Africa).
