dc.description.abstract For a long time the ports system in South Africa has dominated the region in terms of volumes, efficiencies and good practice. However, in recent years ports in other countries in the region such as Mozambique, Namibia, Kenya, Tanzania and Angola have rapidly improved in terms of capacities, management practices, costs and efficiencies, offering viable alternatives to cargo importers and exporters. Andrew Pike looks at port developments in the region, practices and projects which have worked well and particularly focuses on the relationship between the private and public sector in port development and operations.
