On the Programme of the SAJE National Conference. Open to the public. Home and Away. Explore and experience a colourful musical journey with Neil Gonsalves (piano) and Mageshen Naidoo (guitar) in Concer Home and Away is a metaphor where home represents an advantage. In our experience as artists, however, it is the case that one feeds and creates a yearning for the other. We gain new insight, fresh perspective, greater appreciation and renewed energy. It is a ritual act for the professional musician.Home for us is Durban, the church, the Indian community, the jazz academy, the guitar and the piano. We also draw from our extensive travels. We came back home to find that some things were the same, and some things were different, and that we were the same, but different. All the while, we continued to make music, sometimes more, sometimes less. We share our traveller’s tales with people that travelled too, some more, some less, and they share their stories too. However, we are musicians, and it is the music that not only tells the story, or documents the journey, but reveals the constant negotiation and reconciling of the notion of 'home and away'. They are one and the same thing, of course. Yin and Yang. The programme features original compositions by Gonsalves and Naidoo as well as standards with an inherent South African thread. SET LIST.
