dc.description.abstract Over the past more or less three decades the use of multimedia resources within the church increased drastically due to technological development and the increased use of multimedia in the secular industry. In the Dutch Reformed Church of South Africa, the usage of multimedia also increased during this period. Due to the fact that symbols and rituals play a big part in the liturgy of this denomination, the need to research this phenomenon theologically has become evident. Another phenomenon that occurs is that preachers in this specific denomination have become a luxury in some contexts. Many of the rural farming communities still have the need for a traditional church service, but do not have the necessary resources to offer this. There are multiple reasons for this phenomenon, including urbanization. The result is that preachers have to serve more than one church at the same time, in multiple contexts and usually over big demographic areas. So how does one preacher serve more than one congregation at a time on a Sunday morning? How does one person enter two different spaces at once? How does one person participate in two different liturgies at once? It simply isn’t humanly possible, or is it? The use of modern technology to create multiple spaces for the use of one person isn’t a new concept for various church denominations throughout the world. Streaming the visuals and audio of a liturgical space to another space makes it possible for one person to facilitate a liturgy in more than one space, even if the two spaces are worlds apart. But how does this affect the liturgy? How does the absence of the preacher affect the congregation? Can the liturgy really reach its full potential without the physical presence of the liturgist? All of this begs the question: Can multi-media be successfully implemented within the liturgical space to complement the liturgy and thereafter complete the ultimate reason for being in the space of liturgy in the first place: serving God and bringing people into a space of conversation and awe for the Lord Almighty?
