François-Marie Arouet (1694-1778), better known as Voltaire was a French writer, historian and philosopher famous for his advocacy of civil liberties and freedom of religion in France. Portraying Voltaire as an Arab, Coetzee passes political commentary of his impression that such a man is needed in the Arab world to encourage social, political and religious freedom for his people.
