dc.description In this painting Coetzee portrays a head placed on a tray on top of a piano. It is the head of John the Baptist, who was beheaded by Herod on the request of his niece Salome, as a reward for her singing and dancing. A soldier was ordered to bring the head of John the Baptist to Salome on a tray during a feast. en_ZA
