Abstract
Description
This large Arita porcelain charger is decorated in underglaze blue-and-white with five pomegranates and leaves in the central panel, surrounded by sixteen panels of flowers, Buddhist symbols and formal designs in the kraak style. The base is sunken, glazed and unmarked. This charger is considered one of the largest of its kind made. The influence of Chinese Wan Li (1573-1619) decoration on this charger is unmistakable. This is the kind of dish the Japanese produced for the VOC when they were requested to produce porcelain as the Old Chinese porcelain. The Chinese kraak style was mostly used on open forms.
